Description

The Shadow - April 1931 First Issue (Street & Smith) Condition: GD+. The very first "hero pulp", this historic magazine hit newsstands some seven years before Action Comics #1 started the Golden Age of comics. A radio narrator called "The Shadow" had proven a hit the year before, and magazine publisher Street & Smith assigned Walter Gibson (under the pseudonym Maxwell Grant) to create the character for a pulp series. The cover reprints (in part) Sidney Riesenberg's cover for the October 1st, 1919 issue of Thrill Book. Bookery's lists this pulp as "rare", and notes that "first year Shadow issues are quite scarce"; this is one of four copies we've encountered to date. This copy has a brittle cover, and there is tape on the interior of the front cover. Bookery's Guide to Pulps Second Edition GD value = $3,300.
From the Jack and Joanie Kump Pulp Collection. Comes with COA from Heritage Auctions.
