Black Mask #180 December 1933 (Pro-Distribution) CGC VG/FN 5.0 Off-white to white pages. This hard-hitting issue features "Blackmailers Don't Shoot", the first published story by Raymond Chandler. A defining writer of detective fiction, Chandler would go on to create iconic detective Philip Marlowe and pen the classic novel The Big Sleep. Fred Craft illustrates this issue's cover for "Dead Men's Shoes" by Erle Stanley Gardner.Bookery's lists Black Mask issues from 1926-38 as "uncommon at best", and we've only encountered this landmark issue once before. We last offered a FR copy with brittle pages and a missing back cover in November 2023, ending at $528, and we expect very competitive bidding for this CGC 5.0 with bright covers and fantastic eye appeal.
