    Description

The Yellow Kid #1-9 Complete Run CGC-Graded Group (Howard, Ainslee & Co., 1897). We had never seen a single issue of this magazine before, never mind a complete run of the title!
The Yellow Kid was the first successful comic strip character. As Richard Olson and Bob Beerbohm noted in their history of the field, "The Yellow Kid was the first [comic strip] in the USA to show that comics could increase newspaper sales, and that comic characters could be merchandised." One example of that is the humor magazine offered here, released just two years after the character first appeared in newspapers. As Olson notes on his website, "Please remember that the Yellow Kid only appeared in New York City newspapers from 1895 through 1898, and that the merchandising took place in the same time and place, making it very rare today." The publisher Howard, Ainslee, & Co. was part of Street and Smith, but it's possible that this magazine was only distributed in New York. Every back cover has an ad for the New York Sunday Journal, and the one that appears on the back covers of #1-6 is a wonderful ad indeed, featuring the Yellow Kid prominently with art by R. F. Outcault. A fact that seems odd today is that the character appeared in two New York papers simultaneously, at a time when circulation wars were intense. We've seen the character credited as the origin of the term "yellow journalism."
The copies offered here of #4 and #9 are the only ones graded by CGC to date. Overstreet does not even bother to list values above FN, as it's fair to assume that every surviving copy is lower-grade. Grades are as follows:
#1 CGC PR 0.5 White pages. CGC notes, "Front cover missing. Incomplete." CGC census 7/15: 1 in 0.5, 1 higher.
    #2 CGC GD 2.0 White pages. CGC census 7/15: 1 in 2.0, 2 higher.
    #3 CGC GD 2.0 White pages. CGC census 7/15: 1 in 2.0, 3 higher.
#4 CGC GD 2.0 White pages. CGC census 7/15: 1 in 2.0, none higher.
    #5 CGC GD- 1.8 White pages. CGC census 7/15: 1 in 1.8, 1 higher.
    #6 CGC GD 2.0 White pages. CGC census 7/15: 1 in 2.0, 1 higher.
    #7 CGC FR/GD 1.5 White pages. CGC census 7/15: 1 in 1.5, 1 higher.
    #8 CGC GD 2.0 White pages. CGC census 7/15: 1 in 2.0, 1 higher.
#9 CGC GD 2.0 White pages. CGC census 7/15: 1 in 2.0, none higher.
This might well be the only opportunity you will ever have to acquire this historically significant run, so we encourage you to bid aggressively! Approximate Overstreet value for group = $4,400.
