Description

The Comics Magazine #1 (Comics Magazine, 1936) CGC VG- 3.5 Off-white pages. One of Overstreet's Top 100 Golden Age Books, this could make a serious claim to being the scarcest book of the hundred. In our ten years of auctioning comics we had only offered one copy before, a Fair copy we sold eight years ago.
This is one of the first fifty comics ever published (May '36 cover date). It has the first appearance of Siegel and Shuster's Dr. Mystic, aka Dr. Occult, a Superman prototype who was next seen in DC's More Fun Comics #14. When this comic hit newsstands, it was the only series other than DC's More Fun and New Comics to have original content rather than strip reprints... but by all accounts the material herein was originally intended for those two DC titles! That certainly explains the presence of work by Sheldon Mayer and Walt Kelly, as well as the attribution of the cover art to Vin Sullivan.
Why did the first publication of The Comics Magazine Co. have this material? Well, as Michael Sanchez noted in Comic Book Marketplace, the founders of this publisher were the former managing editor and business manager of DC. "Since DC was struggling financially at the time, it seems likely that Cook and Mahon took this material in lieu of their salaries," Sanchez wrote. The new publisher only lasted about a year before being sold to the founders of Ultem Publications, who not long thereafter sold to Joe Hardie who began Centaur. Since this title turned into Funny Pages which ended up as a Centaur title, it's certainly of interest to the hardy souls trying to put together a full run of that book. Overstreet 2011 VG 4.0 value = $7,000. CGC census 4/12: 2 in 3.5, 2 higher.
