Popular Comics #1 Rockford Pedigree (Dell, 1936) CBCS FN+ 6.5 Off-white to white pages. Dell's first comic book, featuring reprints of some of the most popular comic strips of the day, including Dick Tracy (with Dick making his first comic book appearance), Gasoline Alley, The Gumps, Little Orphan Annie, Terry and the Pirates, Don Winslow (his first appearance), Moon Mullins, Mutt & Jeff, Tailspin Tommy, Smokey Stover, and more. A difficult book to find (we've only offered three copies before this one), the book's virtually impossible in high grade. Overstreet doesn't bother listing values beyond VF 8.0, and listing even that grade's value may have been unnecessary, since this FN+ copy represents the highest grade that any grading service has ever awarded to date, for the issue (CGC's high-water mark is a VG 4.0), and it appears that this is the first time that the Rockford copy has been up for public auction! The issue is rated by The Photo-Journal Guide to Comic Books as a "7" or "scarce." Overstreet 2016 FN 6.0 value = $2,400; VF 8.0 value = $5,600. CGC census 11/16: 0 in 6.5, none higher.
