    Description

Durham Whiffs V1#1 (Blackwells Durham Tobacco, 1878) CGC NM/MT 9.8 White pages. This 9" x 6.5" Victorian Age rarity, printed and distributed to promote tobacco usage to youngsters, is simply astonishing! At nearly 140 years old, this copy has White pages. Consider that even Golden Age comics are almost never certified 9.8, then have a look at this specimen, published more than half a century before the Golden Age even began. The full-color chromolithograph covers are just beautiful, and the two interior pages have four illustrated poems. It even has a doctor recommending smoking tobacco after a hard day's toil, and touts that Blackwell Durham tobacco is "gently soothing without narcotism!" A truly unique item for the comic, tobaccianna, Americana, or sports collector! Overstreet FN 6.0 value = $200. An Overstreet note indicates that in 2008, a 9.0 (erroneously printed as 9.4) copy sold for $1,250; and this copy sold last year for $6,572.50! CGC census 11/17: 1 in 9.8, none higher.
