Description
Mary Blair - Alice in Wonderland Cheshire Cat and Alice 11.75" x 11" Concept/Color Key Painting (Walt Disney, 1951). "And the mome raths outgrabe." "Oh, Cheshire Cat, it's you." "Whom did you expect? The White Rabbit, perchance?" Alice is relieved to see a familiar face shining under the full moon's gleam in this striking original Mary Blair (1911 - 1978) concept/color key painting from the production of Walt Disney's Alice in Wonderland. Known for her concept and design work, particularly stylistic color keys like this which are small-scale paintings used to explore and establish color palette and theme for a particular scene, Blair's unique approach to form is on full display here including her signature full moon floating far in the background and casting long shadows on her child-like characters. Alice first encounters the Cheshire Cat beginning near the 39:13 timestamp before following the White Rabbit to the Mad Hatter's tea party, then again later in the film near the 56:13 as his glowing smile illuminates the small clearing in the Tulgey Wood where poor lost Alice has stopped in resignation. Flanking center frame and seated high on the tree limbs, the full-figured duo have been hand-painted in gouache to a full image area of 10.5" x 9.75" on illustration board measuring 11.75" x 11" overall which has been sealed with a clear varnish with the Cheshire's pink fur and Alice's flaxen hair providing spectacular contrast that draws the eye across the scene. With typical handling and edge wear including corner pinholes and faint surface wear, overall this moonlit conversation is in Very Good condition.Auction Info
