Description

Edgar Church Uncle Sam Illustration Original Art (1913). Church anticipates the outbreak of World War I (1914-1918) in this prescient image of Uncle Sam, vigilant but ill-prepared for a sneak attack. An ominous departure from Church's usually upbeat scenic compositions, but bright in its upper color-design scheme. Church's Denver-based advertising agency was a leader in regional commercial design. The artist also would become known as the developer of a fabled comic-book archive, the Mile High Collection. Watercolors on illustration board. Dimensions, 7.5" x 10". Excellent condition.
