Description
Winsor McCay Little Nemo In Slumberland Sunday Comic Strip Original Art dated 12-13-1908 (New York Herald, 1908). The influence of Winsor McCay's masterpiece, Little Nemo In Slumberland cannot be overstated. His work stands as one of the columns upon which the genre was built. McCay, Herriman, Foster, Raymond, and Caniff stand alone as the pioneers whose significance is universally accepted, studied, admired, and mimicked by all artists that followed. His use of varying lines, anticipation of color and patterns to bring readers into a panel is unmatched. Here, the anticipation of youth awaiting the arrival of Santa is conveyed by Nemo climbing onto the roof and then hanging on, as he is sheathed in ice - finally giving way to an icicle landslide!Little Nemo's Christmas strips are always a riot! This one is no exception. This example has all the elements that collectors desire. An imaginative situation ending with a smile and awakening. McCay always makes it a surprise and a pleasure. This strip was created in ink over graphite on paper. Each panel is a separate section that has been conjoined to form an image area of 21.5" x 27.5". Signed in the last panel. Glass front framed to 31" x 37". Lightly toned, with some minor stains on some panels. In Very Good condition. From the Garry Trudeau Collection.
