    Description

Winsor McCay Chemical Warfare Editorial Illustration Original Art (c. 1917). McCay sets aside his function as a cartoon entertainer to depict one of the grimmer developments of World War I -- the invention of the gas mask as a stop-gap against Germany's use of chlorine gas as a weapon. The rudimentary mask depicted here is the box respirator developed by scientists John Haldane and Edward Harrison. (Haldane had devised the idea of placing canaries in coal mines to detect odorless gases.) McCay's emphasis on the masks' skull-like aspect captures a deadly urgency with a matter-of-fact realism -- a far cry from his fanciful Little Nemo comics pages and his trailblazing animated cartoons. Likely prepared at the behest of McCay's senior editor, Arthur Brisbane of The Evening Journal, flagship newspaper of the Hearst empire. Expertly crafted, with intricate detail, in ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 15" x 7". Signed at lower right. Moderate age-toning. Very Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
