Will Eisner The Spirit Weekly Newspaper Section Complete 7-Page Story "Montabaldo" Original Art dated 1-25-48 (Register and Tribune Syndicate, 1948). Eisner's wit shines in this wacky parody of "Night on Bald Mountain," as a horde of supporting characters searches for a mysterious island that has risen from the ocean sea bed. Oh yeah, the Spirit is in the story too... well, he tries to get into the story but he misses all the action. From what is universally considered to be Eisner's peak period on his most famous creation, this in one of the finest complete Spirit stories we've ever offered - the artist's inventive pacing, revolutionary characterization, dramatic action, wildly original villains - here, one of our hero's most famous recurring antagonists, the sinister Octopus - and perhaps most striking, lusciously rendered femmes fatales, all are on full display throughout. Just look at the inky mastery on every page!
Jerry Grandenetti is often credited with assists on the art, though unlike in other periods, it's immediately obvious that Eisner himself did the lion's share of the artwork and was fully engaged with this story, which is a classic.
The pages were created in ink over graphite with white paint highlights on Bristol board with an image area of 15" x 22.5". There is glue residue from missing stat header paste-ups on most of the top and bottom margins. There are staple holes in the top margin. The story title is an original art paste-up created in blue pencil and ink. Page 6 has a text correction paste-up. The bottom caption on Page 7 is an original hand-lettered paste-up that has a small rip in the bottom edge. Overall in Very Good condition.
