Walt Kelly PogoDaily Comic Strip Original Art, dated 6-21-56 (Hall Syndicate, Inc., 1956). Election-year shenanigans, with Pogo Possum once again being pitched as a reluctant candidate for President of the U.S. of A. (An embellishment upon 1952's "I Go Pogo" mock-campaign.) Swamp denizens Seminole Sam the Fox and Howland Owl engage in an extended stream of double-talk campaign blather -- seeking to find "a new truth about Pogo ... even if we have to make it up." Sam, one of Kelly's more dastardly characters, speaks in a metaphorical phantasmagoria such as only Kelly could concoct. The strip's combination of satire with the Funny Animals idiom makes Pogo a feature of timeless relevance. Star player Pogo sits this one out off-camera, but he is on everybody's mind. Kelly preferred pencilling in non-repro blue (invisible to the engraving camera) because the lines did not require the added step of erasure, and he liked to economize on deadline time. Portions of those blue-pencil lines remain to show how Kelly would build his characters before modifying them with ink. The Bristol board is moderately age-toned, with marginal adhesive staining.
