    Description

Walt Kelly Pogo Daily Comic Strip Original Art dated 3-5-54 (Post-Hall Syndicate, 1954). Kelly's darker humor surfaces in this classic bit of wordplay involving a circus impresario, P.T. Bridgeport, and his scheme to hire Albert the Alligator for a death-defying routine. A generous array of supporting characters includes Pogo Possum; Churchy LaFemme the Turtle; Bridgeport's rabbit assistant; and Molester Mole, one of Kelly's more conspicuously evil characters. Kelly deploys parallel narratives in a single setting -- Pogo's fishing trip, and Bridgeport's imposition upon Albert. Excellent use of decorative lettering in Bridgeport's carnival-style word balloons. The sequence is part of a build-up to an unnerving sequence (only several episodes down the line) in which Albert will be falsely accused of murder. Kelly was one of the earlier daily-strip cartoonists to use a non-repro blue wax pencil (a commercial-art device, with a line invisible to the engraving camera) to create a basic composition, the better to eliminate the process of graphite-pencil erasure. Ink over blue pencil on Bristol board, with an image area of 16.25" x 4.5". Handling and toning commensurate with age. Very Good condition.
