    Description

Wally Wood Mad #4 Story Page 6 Superduperman Original Art (EC, 1953). This Superman and Captain Marvel parody has huge significance beyond just being funny. Issue #4 was the first issue of Mad to sell well, and it was also the first time Mad satirized something other than an EC comic. Legend has it that DC threatened a lawsuit against EC for this savage Superman parody, but the usual gang of idiots at Mad simply ignored the threat - what, them worry? Crafted twice-up scale in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" x 18". Panel 3 has a stripped-in original art correction rendered on a different stock of paper that has stayed bright white. Panels 4 and 6 both have stripped-in original art corrections that were done on Duotone board sections. There is an affixed paper mask in the lower margin marked for a reprint in MAD Super Special #6 in 1971. Matted to 20" x 25". The lightly toned page is in Very Good condition.

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
