Tom Carlisle Nothing Seems To Be Safe Anymore Editorial Comics Page Original Art (Des Moines Register, c 1930s). Working in the shadow of the great J.N. "Ding" Darling as inker and all-'round assistant, Carlisle occasionally earned a byline, filling in solo during Darling's absences. Here is a fine example -- a cautionary tale of a miser who distrusts banks. Carlisle eventually succeeded Darling as the Register's lead cartoonist during 1949-53. This large-scale entry is signed twice, in the artist's decorative calligraphy and in plainer letters as a greeting to teenaged fan Jack Kent. Kent took the art-form so seriously that he eventually became a great cartoonist, himself, via the popular strip King Aroo. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 17" x 22". Deeply age-toned, with minor spot-staining. Very Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
