Description

Tom Batiuk Funky Winkerbean Daily Comic Strip Original Art Seven "Superman" Episodes in One Framed Presentation (King Features Syndicate, 2008). A Superman origin story like no other dominates this immense homage to the bedrock figure of superhero comics: Unusual to consider Superman in a shared context with Batiuk's slice-of-life feature, Funky Winkerbean. But such is the point of this generous reflection upon the invention of Superman in 1933 by two Cleveland schoolboys, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The trigger was Batiuk's visit in 2007 to Siegel's Depression-era home. The historical element is covered in a brisk sequence of flashbacks, which also depict two pop-literary influences upon Siegel - Norman Marsh's 1933 proto-comic book, Detective Dan, and Philip Wylie's 1930 novel, Gladiator. Batiuk's view of an early-day Superman, after Shuster's concept, appears in the final panel. Consecutive weekday episodes span 8-22-08/8-29-08 (skipping Sunday, 8-24-08). Ink and felt marker over graphite on Bristol board, with painted white highlights. Overall dimensions, 16" x 40.5". Marker lines have faded to a reddish tint, due to non-UV-filtering glass in the frame; otherwise, in Excellent condition.
