    Description

Talbot O. Bateman Safe Harbor Ahead Single-Panel Editorial Comic Strip Original Art dated 8-24-33 (Dallas News, 1933). Bateman usually crammed plenty of humor into his editorials. This Depression Era commentary is of a more serious bent, expressing confidence in the National Recovery Act (NRA) of 1933, which encouraged fair wages and pricing to stimulate an economic restoration. The sinking-ship allegory (background) allows for a hopeful outlook while retaining a practical cynicism. Conspicuously missing is Bateman's customary cartoon mascot, a wisecracking goat -- nothing here to crack wise about. Inscribed to a schoolboy fan, Jack (John) Kent, who himself would become an acclaimed cartoonist with the daily strip King Aroo. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Deeply age-toned and marginally nicked and stained. The flag (top center) is a patched-in art correction. Intact, however, and as such in Very Good condition. From the Jack Kent Collection.
