Description

Todd McFarlane Spider-Man #13 Black Costume Story Page 14 Original Art (Marvel, 1991). Spidey's back in black! After deciding he needs a stealthy suit to investigate suspicious activity in the sewers, Spidey commissions the Fantastic Four's seamstress to sew a new version of the black costume for him, which fits "like a glove!" Now Spidey has the sleek, clean look of the black suit without any of the symbiote-fueled chaos that led to the creation of Venom -- a win-win for him and his wife Mary Jane, whose traumatic experiences with the original black costume made Peter hesitant to don even a cloth version of its likeness. It's a powerful moment heralding the return of the fan-favorite suit, made all the more impactful through McFarlane's skillful execution.
This page also comes from near the end of McFarlane's run on the Spider-Man title he launched, as he departed after Issue #16 to prepare to launch Spawn just a few months later. The masterful McFarlane didn't pull any punches delivering this knock-out page, ensuring that if he was leaving the series soon, he'd go out with a bang. His intricate webbing decorates the page with fascinating detail that adds depth to the background without distracting from the central figure of Spidey in the suit -- clearly the crux of the page. The fact that McFarlane notoriously hated drawing Spidey in anything other than his classic red-and-blue suit makes this page even more of a treat, as it's especially notable that he chose to bring the black costume back for a two-issue arc to close out his tenure on the series.
