Description
Steve Ditko The Amazing Spider-Man #8 Story Page 2 Original Art (Marvel, 1964). Farewell to "puny Parker"! After the symbolic shattering of his glasses in the third panel thanks to the troublesome bully Flash Thompson, Peter Parker resolves to quit pretending to be the meek teenager he was before he was bitten by a radioactive spider and embrace his newfound inner and outer strength. The cover of this issue touted the comic as a "tribute to teen-agers," and this page fits that description perfectly, teeming with the typical high-school drama and witty dialogue that endeared young readers to The Amazing Spider-Man. Some of Midtown High's most recognizable characters, including Flash Thompson and Liz Allen, feature in several panels on the page, rendered with vibrant, expressive faces courtesy of Ditko. The "Living Brain" also makes its first appearance in this issue, introduced to the unassuming students as the latest in computer technology. The Living Brain would go on to become a mechanical monster, constantly reprogrammed by various evildoers intent on terrorizing Spider-Man, and the maligned machine still appears in ASM comics today.
The signature Ditko "half-masked" Spider-Man face receives a full panel of attention here, a feature that would become a trademark for the character when Peter's spider-sense was tingling. Ditko's style and influence are felt on every inch of this page, with his expressive faces and skill for creating rich patterns on full display.
Rendered in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12.5" x 18.5". With whiteout corrections, slight toning at the bottom, creasing in the top left corner, tape along the top edge of the back side of the board, and some smudging/handling wear. In Excellent condition.
