Description
Steve Ditko The Amazing Spider-Man #32 Story Page 20 Original Art (Marvel, 1966). Any Ditko Spider-Man page is a treasure, but one featuring an iconic "crushed beneath heavy metal" moment is something truly special. While Amazing Spider-Man #33 is considered by many to be the pinnacle of Steve Ditko's work on Spider-Man, few may remember that the story arc began in ASM #32, culminating with the iconic image of Spider-Man trapped and helpless on the final page. This page has never been on the market, a true gem for Spidey collectors. On this page, Spider-Man falls beneath the bulk of the machinery and lies powerless beneath the rubble as water rushes in. This intense moment mirrors the increasing pressure that being Spider-Man has brought into young Peter Parker's life. It is a scene so quintessentially "Spider-Man" that multiple television and film adaptations have paid homage to it, including most recently Spider-Man: Homecoming and the hit Spider-Man (2018) PlayStation game.
Spider-Man's plight in this scene, so interwoven with Peter's grief, is only compounded by Aunt May's fragile health and Dr. Curt Conners' cure for her that is rapidly expiring, reminders thoughtfully rendered in the center of the page by Ditko, ensuring the audience doesn't forget Peter's plethora of perils. With Spidey at his lowest point thus far in the series, all might seem lost, but one of the most assured and certain facts about Spider-Man is that he will always pick himself back up.
Every panel on the page is a treat, as Ditko's artistic mastery and ability to convey Peter's emotions, even under the Spidey mask, complements Stan Lee's dialogue on the page perfectly. Ditko's character-defining Spider-Man design is displayed masterfully here, on a board that is blindingly white, as if it were just rendered yesterday. The truly remarkable condition of this nearly 60-year-old piece cannot be overstated. Rendered in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12.5" x 18.5". With only mild toning, some whiteout, a stat paste-up in the lower margin adhered with tape, and light handling wear, the piece is in Excellent condition.
