Description

Matt Baker Classic Comics #32 - Lorna Doone Story Pages Original Art Group of 2 (Gilberton, 1946). A single sketch was all it took. Jerry Iger saw Matt Baker's natural gift for drawing women and hired him on the spot, launching one of comics' great "good girl" artists. Baker's first confirmed work came in late 1944 on a Sheena, Queen of the Jungle story in Jumbo Comics #69, and by 1946 he was a trusted hand at the Iger Studio, handling full stories with confidence and style. This lot features Story Pages 20 and 46 from the Classic Comics adaptation of R. D. Blackmore's romance novel, with Page 20 offering a particularly striking example of Baker's early good girl artistry. The story was later reprinted under the Classics Illustrated banner with seven pages removed, explaining the differing page numbers in the upper right margins. Twice-up scale in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12.75" x 18". Toning, with whiteout corrections, staining, discolored text correction paste-up, blue pencil editorial notes/marks, glue residue staining, discolored production tape, smudging, missing "Classics Illustrated" paste-up in top margin of Page 46, chipped corners, and handling wear. Overall, in Very Good condition.
