John Cassaday Astonishing X-Men #4 Unpublished "Resurrection of Phoenix Fake-Out" Story Page Original Art (Marvel, 2004). When the thought-dead Colossus emerged from his prison cell in Astonishing X-Men #4, fans weren't just elated -- they were outright shocked, thanks in part to the tremendous effort Marvel made to keep that revelation secret. Arguably the biggest contributor to their success was this "fake-out" page, never intended for publication. Here, instead of Kitty Pryde discovering her presumed-dead lover, it's Cyclops who stumbles upon his deceased wife, Jean Grey, in all her cosmic, flaming Phoenix glory. This epic page was deliberately leaked internally at Marvel, with word of its existence making it all the way to the pages of Wizard Magazine, successfully throwing fans off the scent. Rendered in ink and white paint over graphite on Bristol board with a 10.5" x 16" image area, it features all the finished details you'd expect from a published page -- and it's absolutely stunning.
