Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers The World around Us #37 "The Sea" (unpublished in domestic U.S. series) Story Page 27 Original Art (Gilberton Publ., 1961). Even while they laid the groundwork for an imminent superhero boom at rambunctious Marvel Comics, Kirby and Ayers continued their splendid collaborative efforts elsewhere, notably including a Classics Illustrated spinoff, The World around Us. The U.S. editions of this series had ended with issue #36, but the title continued within the foreign market. This depiction of the 19th-century Naval Capt. Joshua Slocum comprises ink over graphite on Bristol board, with an image area of 10.5" x 18". Where the artists' shared assignments for Marvel's notorious giant-monster comics display as freewheeling a style as the Comics Code would allow, this page for the more sedate Gilberton company is a gem of illustrative restraint. Even so, there is no disguising Kirby's high-cheekboned and broad-nosed facial construction (Panels 3-4). Lightly toned/scuffed and in Very Good condition.
