Description
Jack Kirby and Dick Ayers The Avengers #1 Hulk / Loki Story Page 3 Original Art (Marvel, 1963). The very page where Loki tries to trick Hulk into destroying a bridge in an attempt to draw Thor out into the open. The very action that caused the formation of the Avengers! There had only been a few character crossovers in the fledgling Marvel Universe at this point, and certainly not anything like The Avengers! This was Stan Lee's take on a "Justice League" of heroes. Loki's plan backfires in the most spectacular way as it also gets the attention of Rick Jones, the Fantastic Four, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Iron Man!Marvel has three foundational titles around which the rest of the Universe pivots: The Fantastic Four, The Amazing Spider-Man, and The Avengers. Sooner or later, everything else intersects with one of these titles or characters. In the early 1980s, there was a running joke that if a character got their own solo title, in Issue #2 they would meet Spider-Man and in Issue #3 they would fight Dr. Doom. It was an exaggeration, but not by much. Given how Stan Lee and Jack Kirby wanted to weave all the early Marvel books together, so that they were believably in the same world, a team like the Avengers, that combined many different solo characters, was pretty much a must-have. The Fantastic Four were created as a team, as were the X-Men. But putting the Hulk and Ant-Man on the same team was just crazy, and pitting Iron Man's technology against Asgardian magic was equally an unexpected twist.
Created twice-up scale in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12.5" x 18.5". In Excellent condition.
So the ultimate importance of this specific single page is truly hard to explain without sounding like a crazy-person. And you would have to be a crazy-person to not want to own this historic page, so get your bid in NOW!
