Harvey Kurtzman and Bill (Will) Elder Help! V2#3 (#15) "Goodman Meets S*perm*n" [Superman] Story Page 2 Panel 2 Illustration Original Art (Warren, 1962). Goodman finds a man fishing by himself -- and it's obvious he doesn't want to be bothered, though Goodman is oblivious to that fact. The solitary fisherman just so happens to be Superman trying to escape the unfair world. Kurtzman's spelling of "S*perm*n" in the story was a tongue-in-cheek dodge to deter objections from the trademark-wranglers of DC Comics' Superman franchise: Satire and parody are "the crown jewels of the First Amendment," as Kurtzman once told comics historian Michael H. Price. This panel illustration was later reprinted as Page 11 in Executive's Comic Book #50-159 (MacFadden Books/MacFadden-Bartell Corporation, 1962), with additional art added to the bottom. Elder's detailed art from Kurtzman's layouts was rendered in ink over graphite on illustration board with an image area of 6.5" x 8.5". Slight toning, rubylith acetate overlay taped at the top, tape in the bottom margin, discolored text paste-up with excess adhesive staining, whiteout corrections, and edge/handling wear. In Very Good condition
From the Personal Collection of Bill Elder. Certificate of Authenticity from Heritage Auctions.
