Description
Gil Kane and John Romita Sr. The Amazing Spider-Man #96 Green Goblin Story Page 5 Original Art (Marvel, 1971). The cover swipe of your web-headed dreams appears in Panel 1 of this incredible Bronze Age Spidey page! Instantly evocative of John Romita Sr.'s iconic cover for The Amazing Spider-Man #39, his first on the series, this panel is a direct homage to the image that launched Romita's beloved 57-issue run as ASM's regular penciler, a tenure that ended just one issue earlier, with #95.Romita's influence on Spider-Man as a character, comic book series, and cultural icon is immeasurable, and this particular image has become permanently embedded in the character's iconography. The unforgettable scene of the Green Goblin soaring through the sky with a rope-bound, unmasked Peter Parker -- his tattered clothing revealing the Spidey suit beneath -- has been reproduced on everything from T-shirts and posters to statues and Christmas ornaments. Part of what makes the image so enduring is its layered storytelling: Peter is exposed, both physically and emotionally, while Norman Osborn remains fully suited as the Green Goblin, a striking reminder that the two know each other's secret identities, making their rivalry uniquely personal.
This issue marked Gil Kane's debut as series penciler, and he put his own twist on Romita's legendary composition in the first panel by adding a Spider-Man bust in the background, a bold visual that honors the original while elevating it with new flair. While Panel 1 is the clear showstopper, the rest of the page delivers dynamic visuals of Peter, Norman, and their alter-egos in action, serving as a dramatic recap of their complex and deeply intertwined history.
Beyond the homage, this page is historically significant for another reason: it comes from the issue that launched one of ASM's most controversial storylines -- the three-part drug-awareness arc that ran from ASM #96-98, famously published without approval from the Comics Code Authority.
A standout piece of Spider-Man original art, this page was created in ink over graphite and blue pencil on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". The board is lightly toned, with trimmed margins, small spot stains, oil staining in the final two panels, a crease running across the Green Goblin's head in the fourth panel, scratch effects in the final panel, whiteout corrections, production notes, and handling wear. Signed by John Romita Sr. in the top margin. In Very Good condition.
