Brilliant but brittle Professor Alec Lathem returns to campus after months of recovery from a disastrous fuel-mix explosion, only to face the cruel laughter of his students on this tense page from "The Pioneer". A sharp-edged sci-fi morality tale from EC's brief Weird Science-Weird Fantasy merger, it tracks Lathem's descent from genius to obsession. Bernard Krigstein, at the height of his EC powers, masterfully winds the tension with pacing and panel rhythm that foreshadow the emotional punch of his landmark story "Master Race" a year later. Twice-up scale in ink over graphite on EC Bristol board with an image area of 13" x 18". Light toning, glue residue and production oil staining, missing text paste-ups ("research with" and "space-travel era"), smudging/soiling, blue pencil editorial marks, smudging, marginal pinholes, corrective scraping, and corner/handling wear.
