A deeply unsettling page from "Stand-In for Death" featuring Karl Danner, who discovers too late that the ferry ticket in the jacket he stole was meant for Alec Nordon -- a marked soul on a one-way trip to the unliving. As the boat floats impossibly through the air, Danner begins to unravel, realizing there's no swimming back, no escape. His descent into madness peaks in the final panel, surrounded by the cackling heads of the Council of the Dead. A masterclass in horror from the debut issue of Fawcett's first pre-code horror anthology -- born from the boom of 1950s fright fiction and clearly inspired by the chilling legacy of EC Comics. Twice-up scale in ink and white paint over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" x 18". Toning, smudging, blue pencil editorial notes/marks, production oil staining, whiteout corrections, text correction paste-ups, paper affixed to board in the bottom left corner, and handling wear. In Very Good condition.
