Steve Ditko and Rick Altergott What Is... the Face? #3 Story Page 5 Original Art (ACE Comics, Inc., 1987). Prime Ditko, here, with its flow and pacing suggesting a page from early-day Spider-Man or early-1970s Creeper. A rush of resurgent Ditko magic, from an overlooked gem of a short-lived comics series. Broadcaster Tony Trent, alias the Face, receives a backstabbing (figuratively speaking) from gangster Duke Arno. The ACE imprint dealt impressively in revivals of 1940s characters -- the title character in this instance is the grandson of the original Face, complete with grotesque mask (Panel 1). This issue also is known as Kill the Face, in light of its use of that wording in the cover logotype. Altergott's inking is a fine match for Ditko's lithe and dynamic pencilling. The lightly toned Bristol board sports an image area measuring 10" x 15". Excellent condition.
