Wally Wood Weird Science #21 Splash Page 1 Original Art (EC, 1953). There's an incredible amount of detail in this terrifying scene! The setting is Times Square, New Year's Eve 1953, an instant before impact. This striking image was later used as the cover of one of Russ Cochran's EC portfolios, and we doubt any true-blue EC fan has ever forgotten it.
We have lost count of how many figures appear in the scene, though there must be at least 50 clearly delineated figures, with hundreds more apparent in the background. "Not only are the hundreds of figures each drawn in, but they all have faces," was the Overstreet guide's note. The reprinting of this page in Price Guide #9 (1979) is likely the first time many collectors ever saw this image.
Each time we look at this scene we see something we hadn't noticed before (among other interesting background details, a theater marquee advertises Ray Bradbury's Martian Chronicles). This is Wally Wood at his best and most committed, and that's a level few could match!
Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 13" x 18". The logo is original lettering, done on a separate piece of board and stripped in, sealed with tape on the back. Smudging in the margin, and minor handling wear. Very Good condition.
