Wally Wood The Adventures of Nubbin Partial Splash Page Original Art (Will Eisner Productions, 1949). Will Eisner had planned on expanding his reach in the comic book business beyond the Spirit, when in 1949, he launched two new titles, Kewpies #1 and Baseball Comics #1. A third new title was planned, featuring a police detective named John Law. Law's sidekick was a young shoe-shine boy named Nubbin, and he was the original main focus of this new book. Here's a partial splash page from the first version of that concept, a "slice of life in the big city" storyline as Nubbin observed and interacted with all walks of city life, as they pass his shoe shine stand. This unpublished piece was probably found within Wally Wood's archives by his assistant, Underground cartoonist Roger Brand, who in turn gave it to Gary Arlington. While we're unsure if Wood actually penciled and inked the page, it's clear he added two graphite studies of Nubbin along the left border, and stamped the bottom of the page "Wallace Wood." The graphite and ink artwork is on illustration board, with an approximate image area of 12" x 12" (not including the penciled Nubbin studies), and is in Good condition, with heavy wear and slight worm hole damage along the edges. From the Gary Arlington Collection.
