Russ Manning (as Orcutt) Undocumented Pre-Code Horror Title "The Undying Beast" Splash Page 1 Original Art (c. 1950s). A foreboding opener for a story unaccounted for in the principal databases. Nor does Manning's signed name, Orcutt, surface in such sources -- likely an inside joke, referring to Manning's childhood hometown of Orcutt, Calif. The layout, hand-lettering, and dialogue-balloon styles resemble comparable elements in, for example, the Standard company's horror titles of the earlier 1950s. The presumable dating would preface Manning's beginnings as an official Tarzan artist by approximately a year. The title and the notion of a legendary menace in a "little British hamlet" (per dialogue) suggests a resemblance to John Brahm's 1942 film, The Undying Monster. Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 12.25" x 18". Uniformly moderate age-toning, with scattered spot-staining. Very Good condition.
