Description

Pat Broderick and Bruce Patterson Captain Marvel #61 Splash Page 1 Original Art (Marvel, 1979). Captain Marvel, alias Mar-Vell, confronts a menacing sorceress while his fellow battler, Drax the Destroyer, lies entangled by a gigantic snake. The composition is a fine representation of Broderick's soulful style, with abundant eye-pleasing detail enhanced by Patterson's sympathetic inking job. A pair of gryphons, or lion-eagle hybrids, completes the impression of otherworldly peril. The presence of Jim Shooter as Marvel's editor-in-chief (billed as such at lower right) seems ironic, considering the finery of Broderick's composition and a gathering conflict of antagonism from Shooter that would lead by 1981 to Broderick's defection to DC Comics. This tense and radiant composition is a grand representation of the long-running Broderick-Patterson team. Ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". Toned, with light handling wear and adhesive seams. Very Good condition
