    P. Craig Russell and Michael Gilbert - Original Splash Page Art from Elric #2, page 16 (Pacific, 1983). A panoramic sea battle page featuring the implacable ships of Melnibone. P. Craig Russell is ideally suited to ink the intricate and detailed pencils of Michael Gilbert. This may have something to do with the fact that Russell also laid out the pages for Gilbert. The two are a perfect art team, working hand in glove. They produced some of the finest sword and sorcery comic book art. Some blue under-pencilling can be seen beneath the inks. The story of Elric, the last emperor of Melnibone, ruler of the dreaming city, and keeper of the ruby throne, brings together many images of life and death, fate versus free will, generations of tradition and the destruction of that tradition, thought versus action, evil versus good , and law versus chaos.
