Olivier Coipel and Mark Morales Thor #1 Splash Page 18 Original Art (Marvel, 2007). Not a clone. Not a robot. Not an imaginary story. With this issue the God of Thunder was officially back. The Odinson came roaring to life in this highly celebrated series by red-hot superstars, writer J. Michael Straczynski (Amazing Spider-Man) and artist Olivier Coipel (House of M). But how did the Thunder God return from Ragnarok? And what place will he find in a world torn by Civil War? Our consignor notes, "When Marvel surprised the comics world by killing Thor by way of Ragnarok back at the end of 2004, it was an even greater surprise that he would remain dead for over two and a half years! Marvel tabbed star writer and now head of all-things-Marvel-television J. Michael Straczynski to reintroduce Thor to the Marvel universe in the summer of 2007. They also gave the art duty to rising star French artist Olivier Coipel. What the artist gave Marvel would become a modern masterpiece. Not only was Coipel's Thor loudly trumpeted as the best design the character had seen since the days of Walt Simonson, but the rebirth also came with a costume change to one of Marvel's original looks. The new costume was such a hit that it was the version of the character depicted on the big screen when Thor made his global hit-making debut in one of the linchpins in the Marvel Films library. The two pages of Coipel Thor art in our sale represent two of the most significant pieces of modern Thor art in the past 20 years -- the first cover and story appearance of Thor's new costume as well as his first re-appearance in the Marvel Universe after a nearly three year hiatus." This electrifying splash has an image area of 10.25" x 15.5", and the art is in Excellent condition.
