Mike Ploog - Original Art Splash Page for Marvel Spotlight #4 (Marvel, 1972). Exceptional title splash page to the fourth issue of Marvel Spotlight, the last installment of a three-issue arc introducing Jack Russell, aka the Werewolf By Night. This evocative image depicts the tortured Russell awakening, sweat-soaked, from a nightmare, while his lupine alter ego looms menacingly in the background. Ploog studied with the great Will Eisner, and the influence of his mentor is evident in Jack's facial expression, and the smooth ink lines rendering the swirling remnants of Russell's fever-dream. Mike Ploog spent a relatively short period of time drawing comics before departing for Hollywood to do storyboards and production design, and, consequently, his pages are much tougher to obtain than many of his contemporaries, and are highly prized. This final production page has been created by "framing" the splash panel with another piece of art board on which the title and lettering were done, but all elements are original, with no stats. Light tanning from age; the captions and word balloons are pasted on. 10 1/2" x 15 1/2".
