Lou Fine (as Jack Cortez) Wags Magazine "The Count of Monte Cristo" Title Page Original Art (Editors Press Service, 1938). Fine and Jack Kirby, first-generation architects of the comic-book industry, traded off on the art duties in adapting Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo -- a seminal, serialized title of the British Wags and an American affiliate, Fiction House's Jumbo Comics. This page was published in Wags, but not in Jumbo Comics. The two artists' styles' are remarkably similar at this stage: The tipoff is that Kirby signed his large-scale Monte Cristo pages as Jack Curtiss, and Fine as Jack Cortez. If the page resembles a newspaper's Sunday-comics layout, that is because Wags and the earlier issues of Jumbo appeared in over-sized tabloid dimensions. A rare jewel from an experimental phase of the art-form, when artists like Kirby and Fine were making up the narrative rules and grammar as they went along. Ink and white retouching over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 15.5" x 22.5". Overall age-toning. Logotype (pasted in place) has loosened. One horizontal crease at midpoint. Very Good condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.
