John Severin and Bill Elder Prize Comics Western #96 Splash Page Original Art (Prize Comics, 1952). Severin and Elder, in the midst of their greater prominence at EC Comics, still managed the occasional maverick assignment -- in this case, a splendidly rendered tale of a tribal struggle. (They co-illustrated three of this issue's four stories.) From the bold, deco-functional logotype to the finest facial detail, the tense radial composition captures two great artists at a shared peak of narrative expressiveness, each seeming to inspire the other. This issue #96 also is recorded as Prize Comics Western V11#5. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, with Zipatone shading. Image area, 12.5" x 17". Light toning. Two tiny fragments of shading film have fallen away from the logo. Excellent condition. From the Ethan Roberts Estate Collection.
