Description

Jim Lee and Scott Williams X-Men #11 Double Splash Page 15-16 Original Art (Marvel, 1992). As the final two pages from the final issue of his record-breaking run on X-Men, this piece stands as one of the most influential images ever created by Jim Lee, and one of the most recognizable in all of X-history! Featuring Cyclops, Wolverine, Gambit, Rogue, Psylocke, Beast, and Jubilee, the entire Blue Team appears in Lee's definitive costume designs. This detail-rich splash page serves as a lasting testament to his impact on one of the most important franchises in comic book history and perfectly captures Marvel's art direction in the 1990s.
It has remained perennially popular for more than 30 years, repurposed on everything from variant comic book covers, including a wraparound remaster for 2017's Astonishing X-Men #1, to promotional posters and fine art prints. The composition and heroic poses are so iconic that Disney+ created an homage -- complete with Jubilee's soda and bucket of popcorn -- to promote their Emmy-nominated series X-Men '97, swapping in Jean Grey for Psylocke and adding Storm, Morph, and Bishop to round out the animated cast. (The image can currently be seen on the show's landing page on Disney+.)
To the right of the team, you'll find special guest stars Longshot and Dazzler. Just one page earlier, Dazzler revealed she's pregnant, and here she's shown rejecting her partner's suggested baby name: Shatterstar -- who, at this point, was already an adult and a founding member of X-Force. The mystery of what it all meant lingered for decades, until it was finally confirmed in 2013 that the pair are indeed his parents, in a wild twist that also made Shatterstar both Longshot's son and his father. (Cue the jingle: "I'm My Own Grandpa.")
Purchased directly from Lee's Homage Studios booth at WonderCon 7 in 1994, this piece has remained the crown jewel of a single collection ever since. Just imagine the thrill of flipping through those portfolios and stumbling upon something this significant -- it truly puts the "wonder" in WonderCon, and captures the magic of comic conventions before the Hollywood invasion.
The uncanny artwork is rendered in ink over graphite and blue pencil across two Marvel Comics Bristol boards, with a combined image area of 21" x 15.5". All text elements are paste-ups (some are coming loose), with some light adhesive staining -- most notably in the upper left corner around Psylocke's word balloon. The boards were previously taped together on the reverse; while the tape has since been cut, some residue has seeped through to the center of the image area. Additional production elements include taped page number paste-ups, light smudging, and minor handling wear. In the right margin, a humorous handwritten note reminds the colorist that Dazzler should be colored wearing a shirt, as it's not immediately clear in black and white. The piece is personalized and signed by Jim Lee in silver at the bottom right, just above the signatures of Lee and inker Scott Williams from the original publication. The art presents X-traordinarily well and is in Very Good condition.
