Description

Jim Aparo All-Star Western #5 "Outlaw" Splash Page Original Art (DC Comics, 1971). Aparo excelled at all genres -- horror, superheroes, Westerns, you-name-it -- and often intermingled those idioms as one of DC's more prominent and versatile artists. This title page for author Robert Kanigher's Outlaw series crosses a frontier setting with eerie menace. An unusual touch is Aparo's use of crayon shading in addition to Zipatone shading film. This book's revival of the All-Star Western brand would evolve within a year into Weird Western Tales -- a component of DC's rebellion against the Comics Code's repressive ban against tales of horror. Ink and crayon over graphite on kid-finish Bristol board, with Zipatone shading. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.
