    Description

Jack Kirby and Paul Reinman - Original Art Splash Page for Gunsmoke Western #77, page 1 (Marvel, 1963). As the Marvel Age of superhero comics took off in the early 1960s, Jack Kirby was called upon by Stan Lee to illustrate one more of his Horse Operas, before ultimately devoting all his time to the Marvel superheroes. This splash page holds the distinction of being the last, and perhaps the best, of his many Marvel Western splashes. Jack Kirby's cinematic style of storytelling is in full evidence here. Note how the two towering foreground figures frame the outside of the panel, call your attention, and then refocus it toward the center of the page. There, the viewer witnesses the hysteria caused by news of the pending arrival of "The Dude." Shades of "High Noon"! Paul Reinman's inks add a grittiness, fitting for the Western genre, that superbly finish Kirby's pencils.
