    Description

George Evans - Classics Illustrated #148 "The Buccaneer" Splash Page Original Art (Gilberton, 1959). EC alumnus George Evans illustrates a rousing combat scene based on "The Buccaneer," a Cecil B. DeMille film. George Evans does a fine job of capturing Charlton Heston's likeness in the role of Andrew Jackson, and also Yul Brynner's (with hair!) as Jean Lafitte. During the War of 1812 against Britain, General Andrew Jackson has only 1,200 men left to defend New Orleans when he learns that a British fleet will arrive with 60 ships and 16,000 men to take the city. An island near the city becomes strategically important to both parties, but it's inhabited by the buccaneer, Jean Lafitte. The art's overall size measures 16" x 24.5". The Buccaneer title logo, caption, and movie credits are all original paste-on stats. The smoke to the right of Andrew Jackson's hip has a glue stain. This is a nifty original, collectible for both comic fans and movie memorabilia buffs, and with George Evans art, to boot!

I have done a preliminary analysis and the total of the hammer prices was $67,550. With BP, the final figure was $80,722.25. That is against the total insurance value of $34,785 or 2.32 x ‘pre-auction estimate’. Incredible, really, so a big thanks.
