Description

Gene Colan and Dan Adkins Sub-Mariner #10 Splash Page 20 Original Art (Marvel, 1969). Karthon the Quester is getting away with the mystical Serpent Crown in the background on this final splash page, with a large, dramatic shot of the Prince of Atlantis. This was the Serpent Crown's second appearance, having first turned up in the previous issue. The bewitched crown was linked to the malevolent seven-headed exiled serpent demon-god Set, from whom it drew its eerie powers. Any wearer of the crown pays a steep price -- falling under the mental domination of Set, who then commands the wearer to perform feats which would help bring about its unwelcome return to our Earthly realm! This issue told the origin of the Crown, and it would go on to become a major item of power in the Marvel Universe. The page was rendered in ink over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 10" x 15". The slightly toned board has unevenly trimmed edges, text box paste-up, stripped-in text correction held with tape, some staining, and handling wear. Signed by Colan in the top right image area. In Very Good condition.
