    Description

Charles Nicholas and Vincent Alascia Scary Tales #11 Splash Page "Main Attraction" (Charlton Comics, 1978). Nicolas and Alascia had been prominent as a pre-Code horror-stories team -- Charlton's riposte to DC's classic teaming of Ross Andru and Mike Esposito. Nicholas and Alascia remained so even after the Comics Code had imposed its censorious restrictions. This opening shot from a haunted-circus story captures well the anguish of the central character. The writer's credit, as "Tom Tuna" is a punning pen-name for Charlton workhorse Joe Gill. The remarkable lettering comes from a mechanical process that involved feeding the artwork through an immense typewriter -- Charlton often billed the letterer as "A. Machine." Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 10" x 15". Excellent condition.
