Bud Sagendorf Four Color #168 "Popeye" Opening Page Original Art (Dell Publ., 1947). Popeye artists came and went during the decade following the death of creator E.C. Segar. Sagendorf, a tenured protègé of the master, stayed the course for the longer haul, excelling in particular at Dell's comic-book version. No time like 2019's celebrations of Popeye's 90th anniversary to latch on to some Popeye art. This fine example recaptures Segar's affinity for combining humor with weird mystery -- confronting Popeye the Sailor with a goofy scientist, a strange fishing expedition, and a menacing creep with a buzzard-neck. Not technically a splash panel (too many panels to qualify) -- but then, any Sailor Man's fish story is bound to contain a splash or two. (Arf-arf!) Ink over graphite on Bristol board. Image area, 13" x 18", glass-framed to 20" x 24". Light wrinkling and age-toning. Very Good condition.
