Bob Montana Jackpot Comics #5 "Trip to Bear Mountain" Archie Splash Page 1 Original Art (MLJ, 1942). Archie made his first appearance in Pep Comics #22 in December, 1941, and right away his world began to grow - but for a short time he lacked a nemesis. Batman had the Joker, Superman had Lex Luthor and finally Archie got Reggie Van Pelt as his arch-rival - and what an arrival Reggie had. This historic drawing shows Archie being paddled as he undergoes the pledge process for Riverdale High's Philomathian Society - and who better than Reggie to wield the paddle. As one of the earliest Archie appearances (Spring 1942), the story has been reprinted four times so far. Montana worked Jughead and a character who looks like an early version of the football star Big Moose into this scene, in which Archie is blindfolded. In two smaller panels the paddle connects and Reggie is stunned to see it's broken. Montana penciled Archie's face under the blindfold ,and the back of the page contains considerable lettering practice, including the phrases "Carl Hubbell stinks" and "Bob Montana is a ph***." Really! The image area of this piece is 13" x 13.5". The art is trimmed close to the panel borders, there is a faint blot on one speech balloon, a correction missing from another, and some light paper aging; otherwise, the art is in Very Good condition.Shipping, Taxes, Terms and Bidding
