Bill Elder Panic #7 "Mel Padooka" Splash Page Original Art (EC Comics, 1955). Panic was EC's riposte to its own trailblazing MAD -- similarly conceived as a big wet razzberry to the popular culture-at-large, with a shared pool of nothing-sacred cartoonists. This spoof of Ham Fisher's utterly wholesome boxing strip, Joe Palooka, takes the low road to hilarity, with an opening dig (panels 1-3) at a notorious feud between Fisher and his former assistant, Li'l Abner creator Al Capp. Elder throws in his usual abundance of incidental puns and visual gags, including a sneaky reference to The Shadow. The script is an early job by Jack Mendelsohn, later known for the bizarre comic strip Jacky's Diary and the cartoon-feature version of the Beatles' Yellow Submarine. Ink over graphite on Bristol board, measuring 13" x 18". Excellent condition.
