Description

Bernard Klein (as Hamilton Kaye) Daredevil Comics #4 "The Glass Gargoyle" Splash Page 1 Original Art (Lev Gleason, 1941). Every day feels like Friday the 13th when you're a crook caught in the glare of masked vigilante Thirteen! This dynamic full-page splash opens "The Glass Gargoyle", starring a two-fisted mystery man who hunted down crooks, saboteurs, and spies on the darkened streets of the World War II era. Leaning into pulp and noir roots, Thirteen delivered shadow-soaked crime-fighting with a grittier edge than the flashier superheroics of Daredevil. Behind the moody inks was artist and former boxer Bernie Klein, a New York freelancer who even roomed with Batman artist Jerry Robinson, before his promising career was cut tragically short in WWII combat. Ink and watercolor over graphite on Bristol board with an image area of 12.25" x 17.75", mounted to thick illustration board measuring 16" x 21.75". It appears the piece has had minor restoration, including top left corner piece fill, color touch-up, cleaning, and reproduction stat credit and text paste-ups. The art was hand-colored after publication. The page exhibits staining, light scratches, smudging, and handling wear. In Very Good condition.
