Description
Andy Kubert and Matt Ryan X-Men #33 Gambit vs. Sabretooth Double Page Spread 16-17 Original Art (Marvel, 1994). Multiple pieces of Gambit's mysterious past fall into place in this foundational flashback, revealing his tangled ties to Sabretooth, loyalty to his family, and tragic romantic history. The clawed villain forces the future X-Men mainstay to make an impossible choice: save his brother, Henri LeBeau, or his lover, Genevieve Darceneaux, by dropping both from the top of Notre Dame. With time to rescue only one, the Cajun mutant chooses his brother, setting the stage for his complicated relationship with Rogue -- a woman he cannot touch, and therefore cannot harm. Rendered by Andy Kubert, the artist responsible for many fans' first glimpse of Gambit on the classic cover to The Uncanny X-Men #266, this powerful scene is drawn in ink over graphite across two Bristol boards, with a combined vertical image area of 15.25" x 21.25".
