Alfredo Alcala The Savage Sword of Conan #80 Story Page 26 Original Art (Marvel Comics, 1982) Conan the Cimmerian puts the "splash" into the term splash page. The sequence comes from what may be Alcala's personal-best of many Conan stories. One of the finer illustrators of Robert E. Howard's world-beating barbarian, Alcala tries an unusual style on this page from a story called "Colossus of Argos." He combines his usual woodcut-like inking with crayon-shading on a surface of pebble-grained Coquille board. There also is a remarkable collage effect for the lettering, which is rendered on a separate sheet with windows cut in the art itself to display the text. A real treat to the eye, with action and suspense to spare. Ink and crayon over graphite on Coquille board. Image area, 10.5" x 15". Moderate toning. The page lies in tiered halves, mounted to a backing sheet. Very Good condition.
